Ndiga Njeru — talent

I build the hiring machinery that gets African engineers into the world's biggest companies.

Ten years of it — at Google, Microsoft, Andela, SafeBoda and iHub. Roughly 1,300 engineers hired, and a lot of the plumbing that made those hires possible: interviewer pools, calibration standards, sourcing frameworks that didn't exist before someone sat down and wrote them.

Most recently I led technical recruiting across EMEA at Google. Based in Nairobi, Kenya.

Things that were one size when I arrived, and another when I left

Recruiting is usually judged on the offer letter. I'd rather be judged on what the function could do afterwards.

Where I've done it

Six roles, one shape: arrive where the hiring function is thin or absent, build it, hand over something that runs without me.

2022to 2026

Google

Senior Technical Recruiter, EMEA

Led a team of technical recruiters against aggressive targets in some of the most contested engineering markets in Europe and the Middle East. Most of the value sat upstream of the requisition — reading where talent pools were shifting and telling business leaders what that meant for their headcount plan before they committed to it.

2021to 2022

Microsoft

Lead Technical Recruiter, EMEA

Took the African Development Center into Egypt and Nigeria: no local hiring infrastructure, no engineering employer brand, 110+ engineers hired anyway. Grew the TA function from four people to twelve, and built the hiring-manager calibration training that moved offer conversion from 25% to 33%. Closed two searches the centre couldn't run without.

2019to 2021

Microsoft

Technical Recruiter, EMEA

Held 24 engineering hires a month and finished the year 38% over target. The real unlock was interviewer capacity — I standardised technical interviewer onboarding and took the local pool from 15 people to 84, which was the constraint capping everything else. Also launched Game of Learners, a community upskilling programme that turned into a standing pipeline rather than a one-off campaign.

2019four months

SafeBoda

Global Head of Recruitment

Ran global recruiting for a company that had never had a recruiting function. Wrote the sourcing frameworks from scratch, hired software developers, and opened the Nigerian market.

2015to 2019

Andela

Community Manager, Technical Talent

Hired and onboarded 1,200+ engineers across Kenya and Nigeria through Andela's steepest growth years, and led expansion into Uganda, Rwanda and Egypt. Built the Andela Learning Community from the ground up — it followed thousands of African technologists a year, most of whom never became a hire, which was rather the point.

2013to 2015

iHub

Outreach Coordinator

Built the partnerships with Google, Intel, IBM, Microsoft and Oracle that put real technical training in front of 8,000+ students across 12 Kenyan universities. Spent three years in the room where Nairobi's tech ecosystem was being assembled, connecting founders, engineers and investors who had no other reason to meet.

How I work

Player-manager, not a layer of management

I carry a requisition load while leading the team. It keeps my read on the market honest and it means I can coach on live searches rather than in the abstract.

Pipelines before headcount

By the time a role is approved it's already late. The work I'm proudest of is the community and upskilling programming that meant a pool existed before anyone asked for one.

Calibration is the quality lever

Interviewer onboarding, scorecard discipline and hiring-manager training move conversion and bar consistency more reliably than any sourcing tactic. Unglamorous and worth the effort.

A brief is an opening position

Senior stakeholders are better served by someone who will push back on a spec with market data than by someone who takes the order. I've built my credibility on being useful in that conversation.

New markets from zero

Egypt, Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda, Ghana. Each one needs its own compensation read, its own employer story and its own interviewer bench. None of it transfers cleanly.

Tools

Greenhouse, LinkedIn Recruiter, and the internal hiring stacks at Google and Microsoft. Recruitment analytics for planning, not for reporting after the fact.

Outside the day job

Advising

Senior technical advisor at Kupa, helping growing businesses identify engineering talent through structured technical assessment.

Speaking

Regular sessions for early-career technologists on breaking into big tech, including tech talks with GOMYCODE Kenya. Mostly an attempt to make the hiring bar legible from the outside.

Rotary

Rotarian and board member with the Rotary Club of Karen, Nairobi.

Recognition

Named among Kenya's Top 20 Disruptive People Leaders, 2023.

Education

BSc, Business Information and Technology — Strathmore University, Nairobi.

Based in

Nairobi, Kenya. Working across EMEA and the US, and on the road often enough.

If you're building an engineering team on this continent, I'd like to hear about it.

Open to conversations about talent leadership roles, advisory work, and ecosystem programmes worth building properly.
